Help Us Bring Bernie Home!

Here is a message from one of Bernie's children, Layla.

Bernie touched so many of us in countless ways. He had a deep love for life and for everyone around him. It’s been heartwarming to hear from friends, family, and loved ones about the memories they have of him. Now, as I sit here with tears streaming down my face, I want to share a story about my dad—because I know Bernie would want me to do this for my mum (who he adored so much), and for me and my brothers.

Bernie’s adventures took him to Cape Town, where he was visiting my older brother and his grandchildren. He celebrated his 69th birthday on January 23rd, and we all FaceTimed him. He was having such a wonderful time. But towards the end of his trip, he began feeling unwell. After being taken to the hospital, he fought through three heart attacks, was resuscitated, and kept fighting to make it back to Australia to be with my mum. There was never a day that went by that my dad didn’t tell me how much he loved my mum. He loved all of us so deeply and wanted to be here with us.

Sadly, that night, he rested and took his last breath at 5 a.m. South African time. Now, with the reality setting in, we need your help. Anything helps! We want Bernie to come back to Australia so my mum and us can hold a proper funeral together.

Unfortunately, the insurance company is not providing enough to cover even a fraction of the costs my mum is facing. The cost of bringing my dad’s body back to Australia is over $20,000, and the insurance will only reimburse a portion once we pay everything upfront. That doesn’t even include the funeral costs.

The last thing I want for my mum and brothers is to have to worry about how to afford getting my dad home. I’ve received so many kind and beautiful messages from people wanting to support us during this tough time. Honestly, this would mean the world to us, and Bernie’s adventure can continue as he takes his final flight home to be with us.
