Bernie Recovery Fund

Hello friends of Bernie Doering,

On April 30th, Bernie was doing his favorite thing - riding his bike, when he was struck by a car, we are blessed that two individuals stopped to aid him and called 911. He suffered severe injuries and was quickly transported to Peace Health Northwest in Vancouver, WA around 5 p.m. Bernie sustained severe damage to his lungs and is currently on a ventilator, has multiple spinal fractures in the neck and lower lumbar, a broken pelvis, 17 broken ribs, a shattered scapula, and multiple deep lacerations and contusions. His trauma ER team did a miraculous job working through the night to keep him alive.

It's going to take some time for him to fully recover, and even more to get him back on the bike; assuming he's ever allowed to ride outside again (his wife has some thoughts on that). The driver was uninsured so we are unsure what the total cost of recovery will be after insurance. As this will be a long and complicated recovery process, we are dedicated to getting Bernie the best care possible. This includes pain management and therapeutic treatments such as: physical therapy, acupuncture, massages, etc. Any support you can give to aid in that effort will be greatly appreciated by the whole Doering family.

Any remaining money from this fund not used for Bernie’s recovery will be donated to People for Bikes, a non-profit organization that advocates for and promotes the construction of bike lanes, equitable access to bikes, and environmentally conscious transportation at the community, state, and national level. Bernie has served as an active member on the Board of Directors of People for Bikes since 2016.

We have a long road ahead of us, heartfelt thanks for supporting Bernie on his recovery journey.
