Bertha Whedbee MemorialFund
Donation protected
Bertha Par Whedbee was the first African-American woman police officer hired by the Louisville Police Department in 1922. She was a trailblazer who carried out her duties with integrity. Her husband, Dr. Ellis Whedbee was a co-founder of the Louisville Red Cross Hospital, which served the African-American community. They rest together in an unmarked grave in Louisville Cemetery. We are dedicated to providing a memorial headstone appropriate to the contributions this couple made to the Louisville community. We have formed a committee and opened a non-profit LLC to raise funds for the headstone. We would like to dedicate the stone by September, 2018.
