Beryl’s Bounce back
Donation protected
Mavericks, Huddersfield is raising money to help Carriacou unite provide basic supplies to rebuild the island.
Why Mavericks Huddersfield?
Lee Shepard Quashie is a much loved member of the Bingley Mavericks staff. He is originally from the island of Carriacou and his home roots and family are there. Monday 1st July Hurricane Beryl hit land on Carriacou island and by Tuesday Evening it had devastated the island leaving nothing but rubble in its wake. Carriacou is just a small island of 13 miles long and 7 miles wide. An island where everyone knows everyone but it’s also an island where everyone knows someone from Huddersfield. Back in the 50’s there was a huge industrial recruitment drive on Carriacou island. Hundreds of islanders moved to Huddersfield to start their new lives and now generations later there’s enough islanders that if they all moved back the island would sink.
Lee spent a terrifying 68 hours waiting to hear news if his parents, family and friends had survived the disaster. Eventually on Thursday a friend walked up the mountain with a satellite link phone so he could speak to them for one minute before they had to move on.
Upon hearing the news of the devastation, Mavericks wanted to do something to help.
Since Thursday we have been putting together a list of DJs to play Soca, Reggie and dance hall, R&B, Garage, Baseline and Afro beats. We have traditional Caribbean cuisine, Auctions, and tombola. Mavericks will be donating bar profits and any money raised to Carriacou unite who will be buying supplies for people to rebuild their homes.
We are looking for businesses to support this event with auction items, etc. We are looking for money donations to the just giving account which will go directly to the people and we would like to invite everyone to come to the event and support us whilst we support Carriacou.
