BEST FRIEND GOES BRICK & MORTAR!
Don protégé
Best Friend noun - A best friend is someone who is there for you through thick and thin. It's someone who listens and understands you. Someone you can call anytime about anything you feel you need to 'tell' or 'vent'. It's someone who will stand up for you in the times when you need it most, keep your secrets close, and someone you can trust with your life. They will support you in any decision you make even if it's hard for them. You can be your COMPLETE and total self around this person without feeling uncomfortable. You can say or do anything, and your relationship never changes. And as much as people change - Your love with a REAL best friend will never fade through all the phases of life and problems that come a long with it.
Our mission is to perpetuate continuous and positive influence and change in the community through Best Friend. But NOW, we need your assistance to make this happen. We have had several requests to open up another location. As many of you know; we are a small family-owned & operated Food Truck on Division Street. We hope to create a space and environment that inspires people and makes positive changes in our PDX community and beyond.
One good act, one positive space, can lead to generations of great change.
We have dreamed of owning this sort of cafe for years, but we knew the implications of debt financing in such a start-up situation would create financial pressure on the business. We wanted to start small and experience an organic growth, as this would mitigate risk and give us time to learn the ins and outs of the business. We built Best Friend in the Fall of 2015 and set up in the alleyway next to Genies. We sold specialty coffee, tea, elixirs, pour-overs, juice, smoothies, and locally crafted Gluten Free/Vegan sweets from Margalaxy. As soon as we opened our cart, we started building great relationships with customers and making great friends along the way. We self-financed the entire operation and continued to do so until the Juice Cart was able to sustain itself. It took a lot of hard work, but it was sweet to see it flourishing on its own; to gain a glimpse of that organic growth and effect we had been longing for.
We are proud of our initial success as young entrepreneurs, we'd never thought we'd be the proud parents of a healing and rewarding Juice Cart on Division Street.
Now it’s time to expand, to make more room for greater possibilities with Best Friend. After several weeks of planning, we are excited to announce that Best Friend has signed a lease for a cafe space within inner PDX in the Westmoreland Neighborhood on 28th & Gladstone. We will be in Jolene's First Cousin, A new housing model designed to help folks transition out of homelessness. The building itself houses people looking to get off the streets and into a warm place of their own. Best Friend will be in the base of the building, offering drinks, grab and go options, making it affordable to all members of the community - no matter their orientation, race, or where they live. We will have healthy options for every member of this community.
We are beginning build-out as soon at the building is up; we expect to open sometime in July/August. In the meantime, we are working with local artists, and some dearly skilled friends to make this a reality. We will build out a new space, with up-cycled materials from the ReBuilding Center. Our new space, signage and bar buildout will meet the high quality standards the location demands. Having the opportunity to move into such a well-suited, permanent retail location after 3.5 years of operation is a blessing and truly exciting.
We look forward to a bright and deeply connected future for Best Friend in Portland.
