Bethany Sanborn had a minor infection under the skin high on her leg. It was small enough that it was not noticeable, but the infection triggered an episode of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). Although Beth has recovered from the DKA, she spent two weeks in ICU. During that time, the skin infection progressed to a point where she needed surgery to remove necrotic tissue. She is now facing a four-month recovery time with wound vac therapy and trips to the wound clinic several times a week. Mark and Beth have no insurance at this time. They have been approved for some financial assistance through the hospital, but the out-of-pocket expenses will still be substantial.
