On January 8th, 2015 8 year old Brandon Robertson was directed by the doctors at Peterborough Regional Health Centre to go immediately to the Emergency Department at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Ontario.  The next day Brandon received a bone marrow aspiration and lumbar puncture and later that day he was diagnosed with AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia).  By January 10th he was beginning his first round of chemotherapy and was forced to spend his 9th birthday on January 13th in hospital.

Brandon is currently at Sick Kids hospital receiving his second round of chemotherapy; each round is approximately 29-35 days in length and Brandon is required to stay in hospital throughout his entire treatment. At the end of his third round of chemo doctors will determine if Brandon will require a fourth round of chemotherapy or a bone marrow transplant. If he were to need a transplant this could add another 2-3 months onto his treatment.

Brandon’s mom, Tracey Robertson, has been staying on the day bed in his room with him while he receives care. His father, Brad Robertson, has been home with Brandon’s three sisters aged 12, 10 and 9 in Peterborough, Ontario and driving to Toronto on weekends to spend time as a family; this is the first time they’ve all been separated.  A nurse recently asked Brandon what his favorite thing in the world is, and he replied: “My family.” These visits help him keep up the fight, which he does with such bravery. It’s been really difficult for the entire family, especially at this uncertain time, juggling three young children at home and one in hospital.

Toronto Sick Kids is doing a wonderful job at treating Brandon during this battle. However, a major illness both emotionally and financially devastates a family; it is frightening how fast expenses begin to add up.  Loss of income, parking, food at the hospital, accommodation for Brad and the girls to visit Brandon all add up.

Often people ask how they can help.

Your visits, cards, gifts and donations of food have all been greatly appreciated. The family always says thank you and we are fine. They really aren’t. They are a quiet and proud family who does not like to bother people. So, as a family we decided to establish this Go Fund campaign and show them all just how much we care. This is a terrifying ordeal for them. Show up—they are terrible at asking for help.
