Beverley Town Cricket Club & Hull Baby Unit Fund

In 2018 our third team skipper Kevin and his wife, Lottie, were looking forward to the birth of their new baby. Tragically, when seven months pregnant, Lottie was found unconscious at home and rushed into Hull Royal Infirmary. Lottie had suffered a suspected eclamptic seizure, a brain bleed, sepsis, and other complications. She was rushed into the emergency theatre, and Kevin was warned that neither Lottie nor their unborn child might survive. Amazingly, thanks to the brilliance of the excellent NHS staff, their son, Gabriel, was successfully delivered by emergency caesarean two months premature. Gabriel was rushed to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and whilst his journey was anything but straightforward, the excellent care provided in NICU made Gabriel grow stronger each day. Incredibly Lottie’s life was also saved, and after time in intensive care, she met Gabriel for the first time despite having no memory of the pregnancy. Amazing care in the Women and Children’s Hospital by midwives and consultants and later time spent in neurological rehabilitation meant that both Lottie and Gabriel could leave the hospital together around six weeks later.

What we’re doing

The Lyke Wake Walk is a 40-mile (64 km) challenge walk across the highest and widest part of the North York Moors National Park in North Yorkshire to be completed in 24 hours by 62 boys, girls, men and ladies of all ages from 12 to 62 drawn from all the club's teams. The sponsored walk will raise money for the club's ongoing survival in the community and Hull Royal Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which cared for Gabriel and Lottie so well.

When we’re doing it

After kicking off their cricket boots on Saturday 23rd July, our intrepid walkers will hopefully get a good night's sleep before setting off on Sunday 24th July walking through the night before finishing in beautiful Ravenscar on Monday 25th. The youngest of our members will pick up the baton on Tuesday, completing their junior walk before meeting at the club for a celebratory cricket match if we can find 22 players still standing.

Since sharing their story, it has been amazing to Kevin, Lottie and us all to learn of other club members whose most precious loved ones spent time in Hull Royal NICU. If we think, we all probably know someone who has also been helped. If you would like to help us help them, we would be grateful for your support.
