Hey everyone! This year, I’m doing something a bit different for my birthday. Let me explain.
About 4 years ago, my dad had a stroke, and it devastated him and our family. It affected the whole left side of his body: his arm, his leg, and even his eyesight. Small, everyday tasks like walking to the mailbox, folding laundry, and fixing food now require conscious effort, and though he has regained some of his functionality, he’ll likely remain this way for the rest of his life.
After that, my life changed pretty quickly. My dad was no longer able to work and forced to live on social security alone. He was also unmarried and living by himself, and so it really fell to me to help take care of him and his home. At 27 years old, I was working 3 jobs and trying to juggle being my father's care caretaker. I scheduled and took him to doctor’s appointments, did yard work, and fixed all the things that broke around his home.
If you know me and my dad, you know we are not the ones to want to burden others. Together, we’ve tried to manage these things the best we can. But now, after years of juggling and buckling down, we’re starting to get overwhelmed by all the work on the house.
You name it, we need to fix it. The fence is held together by bungee cords and ratchet straps. a water line in the house caused damage to the floor and drywall. A pair of massive fallen pine trees lay in the yard that needs removing. The house needs a new roof. The tool shed needs a new roof, so the tools and equipment stored there don’t get ruined. The list goes on. Several of the tasks needing to be done are things that can be done without hiring professionals, but unfortunately, the financial burden to purchase the materials to do so or hire the necessary professionals for the jobs I can’t do have become too great, even greater than the ask,
What does this have to do with my birthday? Well this year, instead of taking me out to dinner or buying me a beer (which I would love), please consider giving a gift to help out my father instead. Sure, that could be a financial gift, but if financial giving is not a possibility, it could just as easily be a gift of your time or your expertise as well. I’m going to be spending several days over the next couple of months working on what I can, so if you’re interested, please DM or text me and let me know. If you have skills in things like fencing, landscaping, carpentry, etc. that’s fantastic, but if you’re just a willing pair of hands we can definitely use you as well.
Finally, a huge thank you to all of you who knew this stuff already and have been supportive of me and my dad this whole time. It means a TON. I’m so thankful for you guys, we never would have gotten this far without you.
Thank you for your time and consideration,
Clark
