Big C Battling the Big C

You may know him as Cecil Swanson … Cecil Eric ... Big C ... High C … Cec … the A/C Guy … or some other nickname. But if you’ve met him - you know he is a unique, talented and strong individual – a rough around the edges guy with a tender heart. He is a generous supporter of people facing struggles and giants that can’t be battled alone. But now the battle is his. He is facing a giant with courage and determination. And your support is needed. After shoulder surgery in May 2017, Cecil began experiencing pain in his back and left leg. He sought help over the next 3 months from a spine specialist, a hip specialist and a pain management specialist. He was diagnosed with a pinched nerve and some arthritis and ultimately received a pain block shot for pain management. During the first 2 months, he pushed himself, working when he could, using a walking cane. As the pain intensified, he was unable to work at all and required a walker to get around in his home. He suffered three falls and was confined to bed for a 3-week period. On the morning of 9/11/17, he woke with extreme shortness of breath. As it worsened, his wife, Dana feared he was suffering from pneumonia due to the long confinement in bed. An ambulance transported him to the BRGH where he spent the day in the ER being tested and scanned. He was diagnosed with Pulmonary Embolism – multiple blood clots around the lungs and in his left leg. But that wasn’t the complete diagnosis ….Cancer. Lung cancer - carcinoma with multiple masses – including the lung, hip, spine, rib cage and shoulder. After being admitted, an MRI revealed 5 additional tumors in the brain. Yes it’s a tough diagnosis – but if you know Cecil – you know what TOUGH really is !Dana has been by his side since he began radiation treatments; had a chemo port surgically inserted; and was transferred to BRGH Mid-city for Physical and Occupational Therapy (and continuing radiation). His medical team wants him to regain his strength and ability to walk independently in preparation of upcoming chemotherapy. Dana had been caring for their only grandbaby, Trevor, ever since their son and daughter-in-law lost their home in the flood of August 2016. Trevor was recently enrolled in daycare and Dana had been applying for jobs, scheduling interviews and preparing to return to full-time employment prior to Cecil’s diagnosis. She will not be able to return to work until Cecil’s health improves. This leaves them currently without an income … but they are not alone! It’s a journey they will walk together with faith and trust in The Great Physician … and we can help them with prayers, encouragement, and financial support. Cecil may feel like David fighting Goliath at times – but we know in the end …. David WON. Please help as you can and as you feel led. Thank you and God Bless each one of you !
