Big Step for Aaliyah’s Future

Hello! We are Barbara and Tim, parents of Aaliyah. We could use some help in raising the funds to pay for a very important evaluation for Aaliyah to get her into an out of district school. For the past year her current school has not been a good fit for her and the city we live in does not have the proper accommodations that she needs. We have been dealing with her current school for over a year and they haven’t put her best interests at heart and Aaliyah has been starting to suffer from it. We have made many attempts to get her current school to work with us and the outcomes have been negative. Thankfully we have an educational advocate working with us and we have been working on this process for quite some time. Aaliyah is a special needs student who is on the Autism Spectrum and has other medical needs as well and is nonverbal. She uses a communication device on a daily basis to communicate. She is 12 years old and is a 6th grader. She is incredibly smart and loves to learn. Her favorite hobbies include reading, listening to music, watching Disney and Pixar movies, learning other languages and sensory play. We had to fight with her school to prove that she was able to both read and comprehend what she was reading as they didn’t believe she could read. The school will not pay for a neuropsychological evaluation which is what we need to have done in order to continue fighting for an out of district school placement for her. Our health insurance will cover the medical part of the evaluation however no insurances cover the educational component of the evaluation. We have been fighting for a solid year for best interest and we just want her to be able to go to a school where she will get the proper accommodations as well as the education she deserves.
