Help Stephen Start His College Fund

I’m an oncology nurse at the MetroWest Cancer Center, this is where I first met Patricia McNulty in 2011. She was a patient of mine battling aggressive head and neck cancer. As Patty and I grew closer I found out she had a 9-year-old son named Stephen. He was the reason she was trying to fight the cancer, the reason she needed to live. To make things worse, Stephen’s father was struck by a car around the same time and was left permanently physically and mentally disabled.
In 2012 we found out Patty’s cancer had spread, and that she was quickly running out of time.
My first thought was: what would happen to Stephen?
Patty’s family was unable to take Stephen and she really wanted to keep him out of the foster care system. I started to have this feeling that I needed to do something to help. My husband Michael, the hospice chaplain, was having the same feeling. After many talks we made a family decision to adopt Stephen when Patty passed on. We already had 3 beautiful children of our own but we knew we had to help!
In the Fall of 2012 Patty lost her fight to cancer, my husband and I had to tell Stephen his mom had passed away. This was one of the hardest things we’ve ever had to do, to tell a child his mother was no longer alive. The grieving process was hard on everyone but we got through it as a family. Our lives have been forever changed for the better by adopting Stephen. He has given so much joy and happiness to each of us and not a day goes by where he isn’t grateful.
One thing we weren’t ready for was adopting a child so close to Michael’s retirement. We want Stephen to succeed in everything he does and we created this page to start a college fund for him. He has big goals, some day he wants to become President of the United States so he can help others! If you find it in your heart to donate any amount will help. Thank you and God Bless!
