BiG's Road to Recovery!
The funding will help us continue to deliver services under our three main pillars and help as many children and young adults to get back on the right path from the effects of Covid-19. We want to continue to make a difference and we need the resources and funding to do this.
Now more than ever, our children and young adults need help to get them on the right path to recovery from the pandemic. The pandemic has had a devastating impact on many from the demographic we serve – many feeling deeply anxious, self-harming, having panic attacks, or are losing motivation and hope for the future. We know that some young people will be dealing with multiple pressures, especially those who have been bereaved or experienced other trauma during this time.
BiG wants to help those most affected by the devastating consequences of Covid-19 through its inspirational programmes.
BiG is a community not-for-profit organisation that supports CYP's in neighbouring London Boroughs of Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark. These boroughs are also most affected by BAME youths who are more likely to be affected by poverty, challenged family lives - some with drug and alcohol misuse. BiG's programmes target different groups based on their needs. From employability, motivation to football and recreation, giving youths involved a sense of community and guidance on a journey to a better future and mental health.
We have not been able to deliver our much-needed services since March 2020, the start of the pandemic which has a significant impact on our community and financial position. We have incurred substantial financial loss, with now minimal reserves and the next couple of months impacting negatively on the survival of BiG and it’s ability to serve young people. As a micro business, we heavily rely on generating revenue through our normal services, which we have not been able to do for a year.
Motivational education programmes
Our leading motivation education programme, SHOCK comprises our key commercial service, which was intended to be our main source of income through services. This service is paid by schools, and in line with our business plan strategy, we were planning to contact schools with whom we have relationships with a view to delivering services and seeking out new business opportunities, for the last term of the last year’s academic year (2019 / 2020) and this current year (2020 /2021). However, because of Covid 19, and the closure of mainstream schools for the best part of the last year, and risk management procedure which have prevented us from delivering services in schools, not being able to pursue these business opportunities with schools, has caused us a significant financial loss.
Football Programmes
We would have delivered many football holiday programmes such as Easter 2020, Summer 2020, Autumn 2020 half term, and our Winter 2021 half term programmes, at the very least. They are normally very popular and we usually have anything between 30 and 40 young people, age between 7 and 14 years old (key stage 2 and 3) attending in our Easter and Summer programmes and up to 30 during our half term programmes. They offer more than fun football activities and our popular points system also supports the development of personal and social skills that equips CYP with key tools to return back to school. The points system rewards effort and deters anti-social behaviour.
We would also have delivered weekly football programmes based in a community location comprising of 20 young people per each 10 sessions programme, which is a weekly version of our holiday programmes, and after-school football clubs too (15 children per club).
Employability Programmes
Our Employability Skills Programmes will be instrumental in our communities’ journey on their road to recovery. They teach basic employability skills to teenagers in schools, school leavers, and young men and women. We provide stand-alone work experience opportunities, as well as the BiG YSA Volunteers Scheme, which supports young men and women between the ages of 16 and 24 years who are not in education, employment, or training to get back on track, which is needed more than ever now!
All our employability programmes provide an opportunity for young people to develop key transferable skills such as problem-solving and resilience, self & time management, organisation, teamwork, and interpersonal skills, as well as specific sector or job-related skills. Such training not only help with the personal and career development of young people, especially those from disadvantaged groups but also reduce unemployment, crime rate and facilitate social mobility. Our projects also combine wellbeing with skills development and provide a platform to develop skills for life.
These programmes are normally funded projects or delivered at our cost. We want to continue delivering our tried and tested programmes to deliver a positive outcome and to do so we need resources and help to start our journey to recovery, for BiG and every child and young adult affected!
