K and K's Bike for Trans Rights
Tax deductible
Every year, I like to try a new adventure. This year I roped my best friend Katie into joining me on an almost 150 mile bike touring adventure around Northern Colorado. Unfortunately for her, I chose a route that has over 14,800 feet of elevation gain. Oops. It is the first time bike touring for both of us which means lots of mishaps are bound to happen as we assemble new gear, try to bike up monster hills, and even injure ourselves. So far, both of us have hurt our knees and have had to regularly ice them after our bike rides. Yes, we both feel as old as that sentence sounded.
We have decided to use this adventure as an opportunity to raise awareness and funding for our fellow female athletes who have recently come under attack in the trans community. According to the National Center for Transgender Equality, almost 50 bills have been introduced across the country to ban trans women and girls from participating in sports. There are also a large number of bills going after parents and health care professionals who are assisting trans youth in gender confirming treatment. In Alabama specifically, a bill is on the way to the Governor's desk to sign that bans gender-affirming care for transgender youth under age 19, and makes it a felony for doctors to provide gender-affirming care, provide referrals for such care, and may even penalize parents or the young people themselves with up to 10 years in prison. These are dangerous bills created by fear and bigotry. And we NEED to stand up to protect our sisters in this world.
Katie and I have both participated in sports all our lives. We find it a place where we can escape from the stresses of our healthcare worlds, and a place where we can build community. Playing on a team allows people from all different backgrounds-- race, class, background---to come together for a common goal. There is no better place for trans women and girls than the world of sports. Katie and I recognize our privilege as white, cis women who have found our home in sports and the world in general. We are not constantly questioned if our existence is legitimate. I don't want any young girl or woman for that matter to ever feel that way. Trans women/girls are women/girls. Full Stop.
So, join us by donating as we raise funds to benefit the ACLU Foundation. Any donation towards this important cause will make an impact. The ACLU is already challenging an anti-trans sports bill in West Virginia and may take on more cases as the year goes on. You can sponsor us at $10 a mile to reach our goal. And these are rough uphill miles. Thank you for reading this and for your donation. Your support means a lot to us.
