Biking 100 Miles in June for the American Heart Association

Last summer three weeks after participating in a bike road race called Tour de Gap in Abilene, Texas, a race in which I barely missed the podium (5th place) for my age group, I was, with no symptoms or prior heart issues diagnosed by my primary physician and a follow up cardiologist (following extensive testing) with a large aneurysm in my ascending aorta. Within weeks of diagnosis I had urgent major open heart surgery at the Cleveland clinic. My cardiologist told me it was an absolute miracle that I did not suddenly die on those roads outside Abilene while riding in the race.. Less than one year later with a new artificial heart valve and synthetic conduit on the anscending aorta I am back to near 100% good health and back on my bike training to race Tour de Gap once again this July. I am grateful to simply be alive and as part of my training this June I am participating in the American Heart Assiciation Bile 100 miles charity with all funds raised going to support the American Heart Association.
