Bill Holt Medical Expenses Fund

It’s only been a few days, but felt it was time to share. Bill was hospitalized on Thursday with what was initially thought to be a large stroke. After some tests, stroke was ruled out and we now believe he has something called PRES syndrome. There’s a chance it could be brain cancer, but the doctors are more confident with the PRES diagnosis at this time. Bill was non communicative for the first few days, but today, Sunday, he began to speak coherently. His language cognition is still greatly impaired but he’s able to ask and answer questions some of the time.
This afternoon, I went to Bill’s apartment to get a few things. Even though I’ve always known, this man LIVES for his boys. Every wall, every shelf, every dresser top has photos of the boys, their artwork and crafts from over the years, and momentos from special trips and events. That tiny apartment is filled with relics of love.
Bill is well known in the RSU5 community. He’s been coaching baseball and basketball as the kids grew and just recently decided to be a baseball spectator, rather than coach, for the first time so he could really see Toby and Liam play together for the last time in high school. Bill has loved coaching the boys of this community. In fact, when he needs to give sports awards out to his teams, he’ll often buy extra trophies himself because he can’t narrow it down to just a few special players, when all the boys are deserving.
Bill is an ed tech at Freeport High School as well as a part time employee at LL Bean for the night shift. He works very hard for little money. He should have retired years ago, but finances haven’t allowed it. So back to the hospital… this morning, after days of being semi-conscious and nonverbal, some of his first words were “I’m screwed.” He was VERY worried about the cost of medical expenses, as well as not being able to work. He mentioned it a few times during our visit. He has good health insurance but even still, the out of pocket costs will be a huge problem. He’s been in the ICU for days, and depending on his final prognosis and needed rehabilitation, he may not be home for weeks to months.
