Bionic arm for Carol
Donation protected
My name is Carol Haslam. I am 39 years old and the mother and carer to two amazing autistic children.
I’m appealing for your help as I lost my left arm to cancer two years and life has been a struggle ever since.
In April 2017 I was diagnosed with synovial sarcoma, a very rare and aggressive form of cancer. I went through chemotherapy to try and shrink the tumour before surgery, but this was unsuccessful. In August 2017 I had my left arm amputated in an effort to avoid secondary tumours.
As a result of this, I had to give up my floristry business which I loved and had spent years building up. Since the surgery I have been wearing a prosthetic hand which has no practical use. The amputation has limited my ability to be fully independent, and I have to depend on my husband, family and sometimes even my children. I struggle with simple everyday activities such as getting dressed, cooking and cleaning.
At the same time, the needs of my younger autistic child are increasing as he is losing both his sight and hearing, and it can be very hard to help him with only one arm. Already he is legally blind.
My occupational therapist has recommended a robo arm for me. Be bionic arm .This would give me a functional left arm and would be life changing for me and for my children who will both need a high level of care for the foreseeable future.
Recently I reached a very important milestone when I was 2 years free of cancer. I am ready to move on to the next stage of my life and I am determined to get my life and independence back. But for that I need a new arm and in the absence of full state support, I need to raise 15,000 euro towards the price. I am hoping the HSE will fund the rest eventually. The total cost is 30,000 euros.
I would be really really grateful for any donation or support that you can give to this fundraising campaign. Getting this arm would change my life and that of my family.
