-----------------------------------------------------------------------

In the Spring of 2015, after many months of tests, Chris McCauley aka "Bird" was diagnosed with ALS.

I am Mike McCauley (Bird's twin brother) and my goal is to raise funds to support Bird's Battle against ALS and to help him live as long and as comfortably as possible.

ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease) is a disease where the nerves which connect your brain to your muscles degenerate, leading to a loss of mobility, loss of speech and eventually impact the ability to breathe.  ALS does not have a cure nor an effective treatment. The lifespan after diagnosis is on average two to five years.

Bird is currently battling these debilitating effects in his home in Barrie. The loss of mobility progressed very quickly in his case and he requires constant respiratory assistance, as well as around the clock care and supervision. Fortunately, his speech is so far unaffected and his mind remains as sharp as ever. In fact, in the midst of coping with the physical challenges, Bird's compassion, keen intellect and desire to help others, continues to shine.

Have a read of this article he wrote: My ALS Story.  Also stay tuned as he engages with ALS research initiatives that will soon be publicized.

The goal of Bird and his family is to remain in his home in Barrie for the duration of his battle with ALS.  Preferable to a complex care facility (which are difficult to find placement at in any event), residing in his own home with his wife and close to family and friends provides a great measure of comfort and care.

It is with the support of the healthcare system, personal resources, family and friends that Bird's care is currently being provided. While a portion of the associated costs of this care are covered through provincial agencies, much is incurred personally and as needs increase, so does the cost.

An absolutely magical "Chris McCauley Night" held in Alliston last November brought people together in support of Chris and raised funds that helped significantly during the past year. Mucho gratitude!

To help support the increasingly complex, ongoing and expensive care requirements for the next year we have initiated this campaign on the gofundme platform.

Your kind donation will go towards defraying the costs of nursing and PSW care, physiotherapy, pain management, as well as a host other supportive services and devices.

Your support and generousity is greatly appreciated.

Heartfelt thanks.
