SANM Birth Fund: Lifting Black Families Up
Donation protected
October of 2019 I had the honor of opening the San Antonio Nurse Midwife Birth and Wellness Center. The center is one of less than 10 Black owned birth centers out of 350 in the US. My vision was to have a loving, compassionate, listening safe space available for Black birthing people. I worked in the hospital setting for 13 years and experienced systematic racism through and through. This experience drove me to offer space for Black birthing people that was free from stress, being ignored and the horrible birth statistics/options they were offered in the hospital setting. Black birthing people are up to 6 times more likely to die or have complications related to birth and the postpartum period. Studies show institutuonal racism in the hospital system is one of the causes of these increased morbidity and mortality statistics. Every birthing person deserves to give birth where they feel safe and heard. I had the opportunity to be cared for by midwives during my last pregnancy and I feel that everyone should have this opportunity as well. The statistics at the SANM birth and wellness center in no way reflect the community hospital statistics. At the SANM birth and wellness center, our moms and babies live! Please help me offer free or reduced care to those that need it the most! Thank you!
