Biya & Friends Academy

BIYA & FRIENDS ACADEMY FUNDRAISER CAMPAIGN  

Biya and Friends Soccer Academy has become a household name in Junior football in Zimbabwe. The Academy was formed in 2015 by Thulani Biya Ncube and his friends. Biya and friends Academy is based in Luveve, Bulawayo in Zimbabwe. The Academy caters for everyone in Zimbabwe and one of its main targets has been the underprivileged kids in the western suburbs. Most of these underprivileged kids often find themselves on the streets wandering aimlessly trying to fend for a living since their parents/guardians could not afford to take them to school. With no plan in place some of these kids often find themselves on the wrong side of the law many a times. By joining the Academy, the Academy tries to help them by nurturing their talents in sports and assisting in becoming responsible members of the community. 

The Academy started with four soccer streams namely: U12,U14, U15, U17 boys’ soccer teams. It has since grown and added a  Girls Team which plays in the Zimbabwe (ZIFA) Southern Region League. The Academy currently has arguably around (130) kids, boys and girls. It is using the Luveve Youth Club Centre facilities for its operations, training and as its home ground. Luveve Youth Club is a council owned facility and it caters for other sporting disciplines and functions seen fit by the Council. The growth of the academy has seen its resources being stretched but that has not dented the ambition and its vision of seeing it attract good players. And has not altered that vision of continually helping the younger generation of players come through its ranks.

As part of a thank you gesture to the residents and parents of the kids that have been allowed to be enrolled in the academy, Biya and Friends academy has an annually Awards ceremony for its players. It rewards best players on the pitch and best players academic wise at school. It is not only focused on sports it also facilitates in making sure that the kids that go to school go to school and excel in their studies. We believe in nurturing the kid’s talents both on the field of play and at school. Players that excel in school have often been offered mini scholarships by the academy through offering to pay their school fees for one calendar year.

Every year in December the Academy partakes in providing a helping hand to the community by donating food hampers to old people’s homes in and around Luveve surbubs….it is part of its mission of helping and contributing to the community through these gestures.

The year 2020 hasn’t seen a lot of activity on the Academy operations due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Hoping 2021 becomes a better year and might see normalcy returning to all. With that belief we think 2021 will bring collateral damages of 2020 with lots of people having lost their jobs among other things which may lead to an increase in the number of kids dropping out from school. That may also lead to the Academy having more kids wanting to join.

The training facilities that the Academy currently uses for its operations is becoming small as it is being shared with other youth services of the community. We often have clashes of times with other functions being held at the Youth center when we want to use the facility services for full days, and we have had to negotiate with owners …which has been pretty good. Part of our future is to have our own facilities which we can use any time we want and is built to our requirements suited to the Academy.

We kindly appeal to all to assist us in securing land in Bulawayo to build our own clubhouse and having our own playing grounds with changing room facilities.
