Hello!
Hello!
The Silver Lake Heritage Trust has entered a new phase of our lawsuit to save Taix French Restaurant, Echo Park's oldest and most popular gathering spot. Our case aims to hold our local City Councilmembers accountable for their abuse of our preservation laws, as they falsely claim to be "saving" this iconic neighborhood gem by demolishing it!
Because we are a non-profit, we are required to be represented by an attorney. We hired a hard-working and dedicated lawyer who deeply understands what's at stake and is excited to move forward. Your generous contribution is vital to this effort. 100% of your tax-deductible donation goes toward our legal expenses and allows this work to continue; no donation is too small!
Please give if you can and spread the word, Merci!
Background:
Developers Holland Partner Group, LLC purchased the Taix property a few years ago, and plan to build a massive 7-story mixed-use project where the treasured historic restaurant sits today.
Last year, we nominated the Taix Restaurant to be designated as a Historic-Cultural Monument (HCM). After the Cultural Heritage Commission approved our nomination and ultimately recommended historic designation, Councilmember Mitch O'Farrell introduced an amendment to the City Council at the 11th hour, gutting our nomination and paving the way to demolish Taix.
O'Farrell's amendment is written to specifically allow Holland Partner Group, LLC (who happen to be generous contributors to O'Farrell's campaign) to circumvent the lengthy and expensive environmental review process. Since it is considered an environmental impact to demolish a historic resource, O'Farrell's amendment makes the ludicrous claim that they are "saving" Taix by "designating" 3 accessories to be salvaged before demolishing the building. This action threatens to undermine the Cultural Heritage Ordinance and preservation efforts city-wide.
Our lawsuit is critical to hold the City and the developer accountable for the gross manipulation of our nomination and the abuse of our land-use regulations. If these actions go unchallenged, O'Farrell's amendment damages our preservation ordinance, eliminates requirements for compliance with environmental law, and jeopardizes every historic nomination to come.
We need your help to do this. Please donate and share, Thank you!
