Black Arts Vancouver Presents: Jail/Bail Fund Fundraiser 2022

Black Arts Vancouver, est. 2018, is a registered non-profit based in Vancouver, British Columbia.

We are hosting this fundraiser to aid members of our community who have, or are currently dealing with legal fees relating to being arrested as an Activist, Land-Defender in a movement.

Why:
We believe our community has been affected wholeheartedly by police violence.

This fund is:
In response to increased policing and criminalization of Black and Indigenous Youth.
In response to violent arrests of Indigenous Youth Land Defenders.
In response to the criminalization of Black Youth Activists.

This money will directly aid in the reduction of legal costs paid out by those involved with protesting against police violence against Black and Indigenous bodies, unwanted resource extraction, and the continuing genocide of Indigenous peoples.

NOTE: It is noted in this report that RCMP jurisdictions do not retain arrest record data for long enough times to facilitate research and trend pattern discernment. This is a severe limiting factor when determining the rates of incarceration among BIPOC individuals. Data for “well-being and street checks” is purged after a 24-month retention period. The BC RCMP detachment does not have a historical data warehouse as other divisions in Canada do.

Who has access to these funds?

Black and Indigenous Folk arrested, detained for various reasons, including but not limited to; protests, street checks, those detained because they were experiencing mental health crises at the time of interactions with police, traffic stops, issues related to homelessness, substance use, etc.

Those who have outstanding debts relating to their arrest or detainment within the agencies of Vancouver Police Department, Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

These debts include but aren't limited to:

Outstanding rent, cost which accrued while you were detained.
Medical costs associated with receiving medical care after an arrest or violent interaction with VPD or the RCMP.
Wellness costs associated with seeking mental health services, not only for those detained, but for their family members whilst one is detained. These are there to seek to address the long term mental health impacts of the victims and their families.
Transportation costs from detainment.
Childcare costs while one is detained and due to appear in court.
