Black Boys Do Broadway

Donation protected
My name is Madison Payton, and I'm an educator at a Title 1 school based in Brownsville, Brooklyn. Every year I have the privilege of taking my young Black/ Latinx men to see 3-5 shows a year. New York City is our home, and sometimes, many of our young men cannot take full advantage of our Broadway backyard! This is why we need your help!

The curriculum at our school is tied to many of the themes and skills needed to be successful and be college and career-ready. For example, scholars must write total critical reviews, conduct community interviews, and create their projects based on the shows.

I believe that every young person should have the right to see and experience all that our wonderful city offers. While we work very hard to get good deals on shows, these trips still have associated costs. The pandemic has not made the situation easier as a good deal of $20 to see a show can be a make or break for some of our students.

Now that Broadway is back and running after two years of being closed, I wanted to ensure that my students have complete access to all New York City offers.

This year we are looking to see

  • Trouble in Mind (November 10)

  • Thoughts of a Colored Man (December 4)

  • Phantom of the Opera (January 14)

  • Ain't too Proud to Beg ( TBD)
