Black Girl Hockey Club Scholarship Fund

As a current rookie playing in the National Women's Hockey League, I have been blessed with the opportunity to build my platform as a professional athlete. With this, I have made it a priority to help educate, inspire and change the hockey community in order to make every arena a safe space for all. As a Player of Color, I recognize that within surrounding arenas and hockey spaces, there are few who look like me. Due to the lack of accessibility, affordability and acceptability, those of color have not been embraced nor welcomed within hockey culture and community. Although this is disappointing, we are making steps in the right direction with the help of organizations such as Black Girl Hockey Club.
Black Girl Hockey Club is a non profit organization that focuses on making hockey more inclusive for Black women, our family, friends and allies. Additionally, the goal of Black Girl Hockey Club is to inspire and sustain passion for the game of hockey within the Black community, specifically with our mothers, sisters, daughters and friends. This organization has proven time and time again that they are truly about that action, as they consistently aim to prevent exclusion in hockey based on race, gender, sexuality or ability in the face of institutional racism, financial gatekeeping and program access. Having had the opportunity to volunteer with Black Girl Hockey Club I have been able to be a part of their scholarship committee as they provide education, scholarship opportunities and community spaces that give Black women access to hockey.
Seeing as though education is something I have always been passionate about, it troubles me knowing that not all have access to such. With the scholarships Black Girl Hockey Club has been able to provide I have seen young ladies thrive in ways I wish I could have been supported in my younger years of playing the game we love so much. Knowing and understanding the women's game, one would recognize that playing in college is one of the highest levels us females can reach. Being able to provide these young Queens with funding for their sport is something that can often go a long way and assist with the recruiting process to being given the opportunity to play in college and receive their education as well. Knowing this, it excites and motivates me to spread awareness and raise money for the Black Girl Hockey Club Scholarship Fund.
By providing Black Girl Hockey Club with additional support and donations, I hope to be able to provide all that apply for the seasonal scholarships with funding to support their hopes and dreams. With this, over the course of this NWHL Bubble Season here in Lake Placid [January 22nd, 2021- February 6th, 2021], and in addition to the social justice t-shirts I will be wearing each and every game, I will also be raising money to contribute to Black Girl Hockey Club's Scholarship fund in order to provide more scholarships each season for these incredibly gifted young Black women. In advance I would like to extend my sincerest thank you and appreciation for those who choose to donate. You are appreciated and loved.
