Black Girls Hike Healing Retreats

Donation protected
Black Girls Hike (BGH)  is a safe space for black women to enjoy the outdoors and be themselves without feeling judged or misunderstood.  It's is about removing barriers and challenging stereotypes and reinforcing the message that the outdoors is for everyone.

This year we are hoping to launch our BGH Healing Retreats to reach women across the UK.

Why do we need healing retreats?

Black people face discrimination in every facet of life, from healthcare, to education, housing and the justice system. The events of this year such as the Coronavirus pandemic and the recent Black Lives Matter resurgence, have further highlighted the structural social and health inequalities that exist, which black women face everyday. These events have had a huge impact on the mental well being of our community.

BGH healing retreats will provide a space where women will be empowered, able to explore the outdoors on hikes and other activities such a climbing, participate in wellness workshops delivered by trained counsellors and other therapeutic activities, such as meditation and yoga.

Your donation will go towards making this happen and you'll also be able to follow our work on our social platforms.

You’ll be helping to fund

Accommodation, transport, food, outdoor activity instructors, counsellors for the workshops, and practitioners for the therapeutic activities.

Who we are?

Created in 2019, Black Girls Hike UK is an organisation that offers a safe space for black women to explore the outdoors. We know that the outdoors is great for mental and physical health but it’s not very inclusive. For many black women, getting outdoors can feel intimidating especially when you don’t see people you identify with. That’s why BGH was created; to empower black women to feel comfortable outdoors and create a community and sisterhood. We believe representation matters and aim to diversify all aspects of the outdoors.

What we do?

We don’t just hike, we explore all of the outdoors! Across the UK we want to show black women that they can get outdoors and provide the safe space to do this. So far, we’ve introduced women to activities including caving, gorge walking and climbing and we will continue to enable black women to enjoy all of what the outdoors has to offer.
