Black History Bowl Youth and Family Event
Donation protected
Last year, my friends, Dave Brasuell and Frank Gonzalez. helped put together a Black History Bowl event, which was sponsored by For the Love of the City, a youth sports organization. This was an opportunity to bring young people and their parents to enjoy a friendly Flag Football game while recognizing the pioneers of Black History. The event was such a success that they are hosting one this Saturday, February 26, at the Big Park - Baruch Playground of the Baruch Houses in the Lower East Side. Dave and Frank are fundraising to purchase snacks, beverages, and a meal for 60 kids who will be participating in these games. Any leftover food will be donated to the L.E.S Community Fridge, which Frank and Dave also run through their non-profit, L.E.S CommUnity Concerns, with Trinity Church on E. 9th Street and Avenue B.
Some of you may have remembered a fundraiser we organized last year for our friend, Dave Brasuell, who celebrated his birthday during this Black History Bowl event. Dave is a tireless advocate for the community of the Lower East Side, including our youth. He and other active members of the community are out there every day, helping out with food pantries because we know that food insecurity is still affecting many families as we are approaching our third year of dealing with this pandemic. Thanks to those who contributed, we were able to raise $225 to purchase warm clothing, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and a new wagon for Dave and our other active volunteers to continue to volunteer all year round, as they are working at different food pantries found.
We are looking to raise $600, which will provide enough food for 60 youth who will be participating in this event. The event will include a flag football event both for youth and adults, which will be this Saturday. February 26, at 1 pm. Below are some pictures of Frank and Dave, as well as volunteers, Evelyn Concepción and Mary Cannon, at the Black History Bowl event last year. We are hoping this year's event will also be a great success.
