Austin Food Documentary by Black Lives Veggies

Donation protected
Food intersects with many aspects of society. We are working on a collaborative project to understand how food is related to gentrification, mass incarceration, homelessness, and health in Austin, TX. We also seek to understand how food policy and innovations in community agriculture can create a more just world. Larry Franklin of Black Lives Veggies  leads this project.

We need $3,000 to make a short documentary film. We will recruit three students/recent graduates from the University of Texas at Austin and three from Huston-Tillotson University who have filmmaking experience to work together on the film. Each group will be given a $1,200 stipend. We seek an additional $600 for costs associated with recruiting students, building collaborations, and interviewing stakeholders. Please donate to help us make this film, "The truth about your food," which will be part of our ongoing project on food in Austin, TX, that builds partnerships among community members and local universities.

Currently, Larry Franklin of Black Lives Veggies has assembled a team of community partners:
  • Shirelle Lewis, Black Medicine
  • Faren River, restorative farmer/gardener
  • Uma Rudraraju, Austin Director of VT Seva
  • Aaron Sandel, Dept. of Anthropology, UT Austin

These team members will focus on several themes: (1) gentrification, (2) homelessness, (3) mass incarceration, (4) health, (5) food waste, (6) innovation, and (6) policy. For each theme, we will partner with a team from local colleges/universities, high schools, and key leaders in the local food movement in Austin.
