Black August in the Park

Black August in the Park is raising $5,000 to make liberation a tangible experience in Durham, North Carolina on August 20, 2017

Its mission is to creatively inspire and connect people of African descent to assert their value and engage in social and cultural change. Now in its third year, Black August in the Park is looking to live out its values in bigger ways.

But first, let’s take a journey:

Imagine an entrance that ushers you into a Black liberation zone, a space filled with joyful Black folks of all shapes, sizes, styles and colors. The smell of fish plates and other familiar foods guide your gaze to the parade of Black-owned food vendors and can already feel your stomach grumble with anticipation before you are greeted warmly by a friend. You walk by a group of elders, shaded by a tent, playing cards, dominoes, chess and checkers while others are 2-stepping to the music. The DJ is spinning and she is getting the crowd hype as a playful dance battle ensues. You move towards the bright light of the sun to join your people dancing and laughing because this is your song and something catches your eye on the hill… [Story continued on August 20 at 3pm in Durham Central Park]

This year Black August in the Park wants to maintain the family reunion vibe while increasing local and regional movements’ capacity to engage new audiences more deeply, pay homage to those who have fought for Black liberation in the past and make it easier for people to connect with one another. We want to create an opportunity for local folks to engage with and reclaim this space while inviting out of towners back home to the South to witness and contribute to our vision of a free Black existence. Raising $5,000 Black dollars will be a testament to the power of our collective resources.

Give as you can and then share with 10 Black people who you want to experience liberation with.

Together we can celebrate Blackness, connect with others to design a better future and make liberation tangible.
