Hello. My name is Ronald Holt, father of 16-year-old Blair Holt. On May 10, 2007, Blair became an innocent and unintended fatal victim of gang gunfire as he sat on a transit bus after school. Four of Blair's classmates, one of whom he shielded with his body, sustained non-life-threatening gunshot injuries in this senseless attack.
Shortly after Blair's death, the African American Fire Fighters League of Chicago (AAFFL) started a scholarship in his name. Blair's mom Annette Nance Holt, former AAFFL president and current Chicago Fire Commissioner, led the cause. The BLAIR HOLT SCHOLARSHIP FUND NFP, INC. was created to benefit college-bound seniors at Percy L. Julian High School on Chicago's South Side where Blair attended school.
Julian High School TV Broadcast Technology teacher Kimberly Saunders and her students soon joined the effort. They created "Peace Day" to commemorate Blair and explore ways to end gun violence while promoting the benefits of higher education. Julian students continue the work year-round, advocating for peace in various ways throughout the community.
Blair had a passion for education and music. He loved to read books, write stories and compose music lyrics. Blair had dreams of attending and graduating from Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, GA.
To continue Blair's legacy of education, scholarships have been awarded to graduating seniors at Julian High School every year since 2008. Each applicant must meet competitive academic requirements and complete several hours of community service to qualify. Scholarship recipients are awarded between $1000 - $2500 each. Although the amounts are humble, we see this as "seed money" for first-year college students to help outfit their dorm room, pay for books, food, personal hygiene products, travel expenses and other necessary amenities to assist them on the road to higher education.
Please join us in making a difference by supporting the BLAIR HOLT SCHOLARSHIP FUND NFP, INC. We are raising money to award up to four Julian High School seniors, much-needed scholarships. Any donation will help make a positive impact.
CONGRATULATIONS to the graduated seniors from JULIAN HS 2023-2024, recipients, Ja'MIRAH MISTER attending LSU, and MALIK TAYLOR attending UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN, MADISON!
Thank you to all of the past donors and to potential donors for your contributions to the BLAIR HOLT SCHOLARSHIP FUND that will further the education of selected seniors at Percy L. Julian HS.
