Blake Hendrix Legacy Fund to support Daughter

Donation protected
Many people have reached out wanting to make a monetary donation to help Ruby Jo with things she will need moving forward since Blake’s passing. A fund has been established for her at Truist Bank (formerly BB&T), but some have found it difficult to get to a branch and make a donation. I am creating this fund as an alternative.

Blake was diagnosed with testicular cancer in March 2013, just 16 months after he and Joleen were married. He underwent surgery and 12 weeks of intense chemotherapy. It was at that point Blake’s determination and perseverance was evident. He was a fighter!

14 months after Blake’s initial diagnosis, he and Joleen found out they were expecting a baby. In February 2015, they welcomed their miracle little girl, sweet Ruby Jo.  They were elated!

In 2017, when Ruby Jo was 2 years old, Blake’s cancer returned. This time he endured a complicated and very invasive surgery. It took about 6-8 weeks for him to recover. This was a difficult time for Blake as he was realizing his dreams of family and growing hoof trimming business. He once again demonstrated great strength and determination through this adversity.

The next 2 1/2 years life seemed to be heading in the right direction as they settled in Newberry as a family of 3. Family life was good and Blake’s hoof trimming business was continuing to grow.

On December 2, 2019 their world was turned upside down when Blake suffered a health crisis and required life saving surgery. During this, doctors discovered the cancer was back with a vengeance. From that point forward, life as they knew it was forever changed. The next 22 months would prove to be the most challenging physically, mentally and emotionally for Blake and his girls. Blake endured intense chemotherapy, radiation and surgeries to remove a large blood clot and brain tumors. He battled brain bleeding, brain swelling, seizures and the loss of independence. Blake expressed the deep frustration he felt not being able to provide for his family.  Blake’s desire to be healed and restored was motivated by his love for Joleen and Ruby Jo. He fought relentlessly to overcome the cancer because his heart desired to continue the life he and Joleen had planned.

Though it all, Blake never stopped fighting. He never gave up. At just 39 years old, on October 10, 2021, be fought his last battle. He was healed, made whole and in the presence of our Savior. While we are thankful he is no longer suffering, our hearts are completely broken. The depth of loss is immeasurable. Ruby Jo lost her Daddy, cheerleader and hero at just 6 years old. Joleen lost her companion, friend and teammate. She is now a widow and a single mom that will navigate life in a way she never imagined.  Their loss cannot be replaced through earthly efforts, but our desire is to help relieve some of their burdens with prayers, encouragement and support as you feel led to do so.

Our family could never adequately express the gratitude we have for the love and support that has already been shown over these past 22 months.
