Help Us Bless Sweet Maria — A Real-Life Angel at Coachella
Hi everyone,
During Coachella Weekend 2 last year, something magical happened. While dancing at the Quasar stage, I noticed an older woman weaving through the crowd — not partying, but picking up trash. She had a big, beautiful smile on her face and was grooving to the music while filling a large bag, piece by piece.
When she reached our group, she noticed my umbrella, smiled even bigger, and without hesitation — dropped her picker, and just danced with us. Spinning in circles, laughing, moving like pure joy. She didn’t say much, but she radiated something we all felt in our hearts: light.
Then she picked up her trash stick, gave us one last smile, and disappeared into the crowd.
I stood there frozen, hit with the feeling that this woman — who reminded me so much of my own mother — was out here not because she wanted to be, but because she needed to be. A woman who would do anything to support her kids or grandkids. My heart cracked open.
I ran after her, and with a little broken Spanglish and a whole lot of love, I officially met Maria. I gave her all the cash I had. Others who saw what happened came over and did the same. She was overwhelmed — she cried. We all did.
As fate would have it, I saw Maria again the very next day. This time, she remembered us and came dancing right into our circle like old friends. We exchanged numbers — and that was the beginning of something truly special.
Fast forward: I saw her again at Stagecoach. And we’ve been in touch ever since — texting weekly. Maria never fails to send the most beautiful, positive messages filled with love, light, and joy. She’s become family in spirit.
Last November, Maria suffered a serious medical emergency — a rupture in her head that kept her in the hospital for a month. But like the warrior she is, she pulled through. And through it all, she never stopped smiling.
So this year, for my birthday, I’m asking my friends — and anyone moved by Maria’s story — to donate whatever they can. Let’s gift Maria a blessing: whether it helps cover her medical bills, lets her take a much-needed trip, or simply reminds her how loved she truly is.
My goal is to keep this GoFundMe open through Coachella and Stagecoach, and hand-deliver the full amount to Maria in person after the festivals.
If you happen to see Maria — dancing, smiling, cleaning, spreading sunshine — take a moment to say hi. You’ll see exactly why she’s worth celebrating but please try and keep the GoFund me a surprise!
Let’s change the life of someone who quietly changes the energy of everyone around her.
With love,
Darren Blatt
(Funds will be collected by me and given directly to Maria at the end of April.)
