To every person I’ve ever met:
I need your help, and here’s why. . .
In 2015 I was introduced to many wonderful families while working on a LNG plant in Solomon’s Island, but one of the sweetest ones was definitely the Brumfield family! Brett worked with Seth as a crane operator (currently holds a card representing local 49) and Rebecca was a stay at home mom taking care of their sweet little girl Sibylla. I remember the first time I met Rebecca we instantly clicked. I don’t know if it was the southern charm or just out genuine love for live and everything in it. As I talked to Rebecca (“Becky” and Brett calls her) I came to learn that she had been living with cystic fibrosis since she was born but officially diagnosed at 15/16 years old. I was pretty uneducated on this subject but I remember noting to myself that I would go home to try and learn more about it. WOW was I in for some learning. Here’s how google defines cystic fibrosis: a hereditary disorder affecting the exocrine glands. It causes the production of abnormally thick mucus, leading to the blockage of the pancreatic ducts, intestines, and bronchi and often resulting in respiratory infection. Over the short time of knowing Rebecca she had several battles with pneumonia and other sicknesses where her lungs were operating at < 20 % capacity. Less than 20% ya’ll, we think we feel bad when we have pneumonia and we have 100% lung capacity can you imagine?! She had to have several conversations with her surgeons on if she would have to have a lung transplant?, would she survive a lung transplant?, does she qualify for one?, will her body reject it?, and how will she afford it?, will she live to see Sibylla’s next birthday, her next wedding anniversary? Rebecca is a RN so, she was able to self-administer IV fluids to herself at home instead of taking herself away from Sibylla and leaving Brett unable to work. I CANNOT IMAGINE YA’LL! My heart broke for this sweet family all the time as I watched this disease attack one of the sweetest family’s that I had ever met.
The Brumfield’s grew up in a small town called Harts in West Virginia where they built their forever dream home as young adults and Brett worked hard as a WV pipeliner. This is also home to their son Justin Brumfield who just graduated from high school, who continues to make them proud all the time. In the fall he will attend Marshall University to follow in Rebecca’s footsteps to become a registered nurse. This house was STUNNING. It had everything anyone could ever want. During our stay in Maryland some jerk came and burnt that dream down. No one helped them bring the criminal to justice so, this family had to watch that dream die. Rebecca was now driving back and forth not only to West Virginia to try and take pictures, salvage anything that may be left of their things, file police reports, but also back and forth to North Carolina to see her doctors at UNC Chapel Hill. Talk about a trooper!!!
Eventually, as construction does, we all temporarily said goodbye and parted ways. Brett took a job working in Texas and we moved to Rhode Island. Rebecca continued to battle with Cystic Fibrosis, but recently decided that she wanted to get back into working as a RN to help support her family, and follow her passion. In June 2018 Brett was tragically and rapidly diagnosed with a rare form of thyroid cancer. He presented with what he believed to be headaches to the emergency room. BOOM! another tragedy presented for this already overwhelmed family. Within a couple weeks Brett had to stop work and come back to Maryland where Rebecca and Sibylla were to see surgeons at John Hopkins Hospital. Unfortunately due to new emergencies now presenting and the dangers of Rebecca being subjected to deadly germs for her body she is unable to work at this time. On July 12, Brett was scheduled for a surgery to remove the cancer with a 8 hour surgery. After 12 hours they were able to remove some but not all of the cancer in Brett’s body. The doctor’s were very concerned that Brett would not breathe on his own and were presented with the possibility of having to give him a tracheostomy. Luckily Brett began to breathe on his own and they were able to preserve Brett’s voice so his sweet children can still hear their daddy’s voice. Praise the Lord!!! Brett has a long way to go and his prognosis is not the best. Again, Brett has a rare form of aggressive cancer trying to rule his body. At this time radiation and chemo are not options for treatment. However, Brett is brave and he is strong, and our GOD IS GOOD. Also, he has a few of the strongest people to stand by his side.
So here’s my ask… If you have some spare 5’s, 10’s, 20’s, 100’s, please consider donating to this family that I am positive is stressed about finances. I am telling you RIGHT NOW there is not a more deserving family out there!! Also, please join me in praying every single day for Brett, Rebecca, Sibylla and Justin. They could use extra prayers around finances, approval for special insurances, disability, unemployment and just over all peace.
All the love in the world <3
