Blessings for Amika Smith

On October 22nd my mother was diagnosed with Covid 19. She was tested by a physician and was sent home with steroids and anti-nausea medication. Each day that passed she became more sick, and she finally had to make the hard decision to check in the Emergency Room at St. Francis Bartlett Hospital on October 27th. The hospital found out that the Covid virus has caused my mom to have "Broken Glass Syndrome" with pus, including fluid in her lungs from the viral pneumonia. She was very scared because each day it was becoming harder for her to breath. She was placed on oxygen, antiviral medications, steroids, but her body was not responding to any of the treatments. In order to try to save her life she has been placed on a mechanical ventilator while being fully sedated. She is truly fighting for her life and we are praying God will heal her body.

It is so hard because none of us can be by her bedside. We do not know how long she will need to be on the ventilator to help her breath, but we do know that this is a very long road to recovery.  My mother has diabetes and her vision has become worse every time she is put on steroids. We know by her physician that she could become blind from the IV steroid treatments. We are praying God protects her eyesight from blindness. If we get the great news that her body becomes strong enough to be off the ventilator her body will still need many months to recover. She has been a nurse for over 16 years and she truly loves her nurse career.  She has taken great care of so many people, but I am not sure if or when she will be able to go back to the job she loves.
