BLM Mural in Binghamton, NY

My name is Kristen Nicole Mann and I am a Local Black Artist in Binghamton, NY.
The following description below explains why the funds are needed. There is equipment as well as paint that will need to be purchased for this major project. I am asking for community support to make this happen and go smoothly! This is an inspiration from what has happened with the senseless acts that have resulted in deaths at the hands of police brutality. I would like to see the community paint this all together to make an imprint in our city and show that black citizens do matter.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
As a part of this moment in history, we have the opportunity to make a lasting impact by bringing awareness to the injustices faced by African-Americans on a local, national, and global scale. To show support and continue the momentum happening nation-wide towards unified change, we, as a community, will paint 'Black Lives Matter' on Wall St. here in Downtown Binghamton.
BACKGROUND:
In the wake of a number of troubling deaths in the black community, most notably that of George Floyd’s, a number of notable murals have appeared as a means of expressing peaceful support for the community. The most impactful being that of “Black Lives Matter” which appeared seemingly overnight in Washington, D.C. It’s impact resonated in waves across our country, where we now see similar street murals in:
Albany, New York
Charlotte, North Carolina
Dallas, Texas
Oakland, California
Raleigh, North Carolina (a rendition)
Seattle, Washington
And this same action has been approved in:
Bronx, New York
Brooklyn, New York
Manhattan, New York
Queens, New York
Staten Island, New York
Syracuse, New York
Binghamton should be next on that list.
PROPOSED LOCATION:
Located in Downtown Binghamton, nestled along “Peace Makers Plaza,” and a number of tributes to the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Wall St. is the ideal location for this community action. This highly accessible and predominantly foot-trafficked location keeps both volunteers and soon visitors to the iconic mural away from moving vehicles while prolonging the longevity of the street art.
COMMUNITY & ART:
Art has a powerful ability to bring together a community. This work of public art will demonstrate support for our area’s Black community through collective execution and city approval. With your support, this sanctioned street mural will place Binghamton on the growing list of cities choosing to help elevate black voices.
