This Fundraiser
The people of Gaza are facing unimaginable devastation, death, and destruction exacted by the bombings and ground assaults that began 10/7/23. According to the AP, as of 10/29 an estimated 8,000 Palestinians have been killed and over 25,000 injured, with destruction to more than 27,000 housing units, and displacement of approximately 1.4 million Palestinians, over 70% of Gaza’s total population.
This is a fundamentally humanitarian crisis - food, water, clothing, medicine, and shelter are in direly short supply. Our organization is dedicated to addressing these humanitarian needs. Once we determine that our team in Gaza can move safely, we will conduct a needs assessment, then direct funding into addressing these basic needs. We are particularly attentive to the needs of children, who make up more than half of the population of Gaza.
Please see below for more information about us.
Mission Statement
By providing much needed basic necessities, including food, water, clothing, and medicine to innocent children, women, and men in Gaza, we endeavor to support the people most harmed by the tragedy of war, uplifting the intrinsic humanity and right to dignity of all people.
Who Are We
We are a group of friends, who met while working to provide frontline support to people undergoing forced migration in Samos, Greece. Our backgrounds include social work, healthcare, teaching, public health, skilled crafts, non-profit leadership, and business ownership. Our team comes from 3 different continents, and most importantly, is led by Palestinian refugees and current residents of Gaza.
Specific Aims
- Rapid resource distribution in times of crisis through grassroots organizing, led by trusted members of the community
- Social and material support, driven by the needs identified by people in Gaza
- Long-term sustainable support for the most vulnerable people impacted by violence and conflict, especially children
Our History
From May 9-13 of 2023, extensive bombing in Gaza killed 33 people, displaced 1,244 people, and damaged or destroyed 2,943 housing units. Over these four days, 49 educational facilities sustained damage in all 5 regions of Gaza and explosive remnants of war (ERW) were found in 9 schools; an estimated 25,976 students and 1,209 teachers and staff were affected.
Mohammed and Asil Alfurani worked together with others to organize a response action - raising just €920 was enough to carry out a community needs assessment, organize mass food relief and distribution of toys to children, providing much needed material and emotional relief. Videos of these actions are available on our website.
On October 7, 2023, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared war in Gaza. We quickly organized, reigniting Help Gaza Now to bring resources to those suffering
Present Objective
Our primary objective is crowdfunding. Due to the siege in Gaza, nearly every basic necessity is in short supply. Our aim is to collect funds so that – as soon as the siege lifts – we can rapidly deploy food, clothes, and other basic necessities where it’s needed most.
Values
Universal Rights: Safeguarding human dignity, equality, and well-being, is essential. We stand for the belief that human rights are inalienable, entitled to all people especially amidst the chaos and fear of war. Such rights include unfettered access to the material resources for survival, including food, water, clothing, medicine, and shelter, as well as the social and emotional environment necessary for wellbeing, including a sense of safety, security, community, and the ability to pursue gainful employment.
Empowerment: Community-led solutions are crucial to any humanitarian disaster response as they not only foster a sense of ownership and resilience within affected communities but also ensure that interventions are tailored to local needs and cultural context. By empowering individuals and communities to take an active role in their own recovery, we promote self-sufficiency, sustainable solutions, and a more effective, compassionate response.
Humanity: We recognize that the death and destruction being enacted on the people of Gaza is a product of a historically rooted conflict. However, we reject the politicization of the humanitarian needs of the people of Gaza and stand firm in our commitment to the humanity of Palestinians and all those impacted by the violence of war.
