Who you know influences the opportunities you have access to, so those in privileged circles regularly excel. Despite their talent, those from less privileged backgrounds go unseen and unnoticed. This is a familiar experience for ethnic minority and working-class creatives in the fashion, film & television and other media industries.
Statistics show that ethnic minorities make up less than 12% of the film and television workforce, while in the fashion sector, they make up just 7%. A report by the Creative Industries Policies and Evidence Centre also revealed that just 16% of people working in the creative industries are from working-class backgrounds.
We knew a change needed to be made. So, The Kusp was born and set out to level the playing field in the creative industry by providing access to:
- Industry education and insight
- Industry Networks
- Work opportunities and talent
What we do
Improve access for underrepresented talent from ethnic minority, working-class, neurodivergent and disabled groups within the creative industries - namely film, television, fashion and print media - through talent development and work opportunities. Collaborating and partnering with reputable industry brands and specialists on masterclasses, portfolio reviews sessions, mentoring, talent showcases and more.
Our intimate approach was built by understanding that some of the best learning experiences are personalised and an awareness that many diverse creatives are introverted. Therefore, creating spaces where introverts, and extroverts, can be comfortable is essential.
To date, we have collaborated, partnered and worked with Apple Beats, United Agents, Somesuch, Net-A-Porter, ITV Studios, Puma and many more to give diverse creatives access to impactful opportunities, while giving employers access to an upskilled talent pool.
Your donations will help us fund:
1. Providing free talent development experiences and fund memberships for under-represented creatives to learn and connect with the best-in-class within the industry.
2. Curating educational and informative content to upskill our creative community nationally, and internationally.
3. Contribute towards our community growth in new regions, with the help of volunteers or freelance support.
4. Creating new and fresh avenues to help employers, and industry specialists to connect with diverse talent.
Your support will ensure underrepresented talent no longer go unseen, unnoticed or overlooked within their creative industries.
