On July 1st, 2023, our father, E Bob Mabry passed away unexpectedly. As a Korean War Veteran, he was initially admitted to the VA Hospital in Spokane WA on the eve of June 15th, but was transferred to Sacred Heart Medical Center because the VA didn’t have a cardiac unit equipped to care for our dad's severe heart condition. After being admitted to the ICU, we were told he had suffered a heart attack, had not one, but two subdural hematomas (probably from previous falls) with his brain continuously bleeding, weak kidney function, blood clots in his leg, low blood sugar levels, and pneumonia! As a result of his complex physical condition, the doctors were unable to operate or use blood thinners, as any evasive treatment or surgery would be detrimental.
After a few days, he began showing signs of restlessness and anxiety. Each doctor reiterated the severity of his illness. Dad’s condition was terminal. So we, as a family, agreed with the doctor’s advice, and to provide him with Comfort Care while making preparations for him to be transferred to the VA Hospice facility on June 27th. By the 28th, he was no longer able to consume food or liquid. His body had completed its mission and began its final moments here on Earth. He transitioned 3 days later.
My siblings and I began the arduous task of going through his paperwork and contacting his insurance agency. We, knowing he’d been investing in a Life Insurance policy for decades, contacted them, and we were told he only had Accidental Life Ins. No benefits were granted, as he died of what they called, “natural causes”. As a Korean War Veteran, we contacted the VA. They too provided no financial benefits as well. His military salute was beautiful, nonetheless.
So here we are, reaching out to humanity, those willing to help us help our father proudly close the chapter of his life. Humbly we pray for any, and all gifts of love and support to help our family during this difficult time.
