It is with great sorrow and a heavy heart that I regretfully give you the news that my brother, Bob Oddo, passed away on January 29th in Myanmar (Burma)
The preliminary autopsy revealed Bob died of an aortic aneurysm, with a secondary diagnosis of COVID. He was biking when he was stricken with chest pain and was immediately taken to a local hospital. They originally thought he had a heart attack, and was being treated accordingly. Soon after, he was transferred to a different hospital closer to his home. The second hospital determined that he did not have a heart attack and began testing for other conditions. He initially tested negative for COVID 19, but later that same week tested positive.
I spoke with Bob every day during his hospital stay, and he was trying to remain positive as we discussed medical options in Myanmar and Thailand. There are many other details to the situation, but suffice it to say, aneurysms are often difficult to detect, and even more difficult to treat. In Bob’s case they were unable to make the diagnosis before it took his life.
As most of you know Bob was a dedicated science teacher for over 30 years and that he taught in many different countries around the world. Bob’s devotion to motivate, inspire and educate was greatly admired and valued by his colleagues students, family and friends
We are in the process of setting up The Bob Oddo Foundation. Its mission will initially be to fund the building and /or the restoration of rural schools in Myanmar- a place that is home to hundreds of children who have no opportunity for formal education. At the time of Bob’s death, he had already started the restoration of a school, which he was personally funding. In the meantime, we are setting up this GoFundMe to start the dream Bob had for this place and its children. All of the money raised will go towards completing this project and providing new educational opportunities in Myanmar and Southeast Asia.
I would greatly appreciate it if you would share this with anyone who might be interested in continuing Bob’s legacy and vision.
Many thanks.
