On March 13, our dad, Bob Woll, was diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer.
Dad has always been pretty healthy, never content to sit still. He looked a little thinner, but nothing out of the ordinary until Mom walked outside with him, where the daylight revelead he was extremely jaundiced.
Scans showed a growth on his liver. But the immediate liver function was critical. Doctors did an emergency endoscopic procedure to insert stents into his liver in order to drain the bile ducts. He had to get healthy enough for chemotherapy. His bilirubin numbers would go from 24 down to the normal level of 1.
As soon as he could, he began treatment with Dr. Chue at Lifespring Cancer Treatment Center https://www.lifespringcancer.com/, an innovator with success in treating cancer with micro doses of chemo. The goal is to shrink the baseball-sized tumor so that it could be removed surgically.
Dad has been going to treatments each week for seven weeks with a few hiccups along the way. But last week, Dad's health took a sharp turn when complications from a new infection in his colon left him extremely dehydrated.
Today, he has been in the hospital for a week with another week likely ahead of him, followed by possible rehab. It's still a steep climb just to be healthy enough for chemo.
Throughout this whole ordeal, Mom has been the ultimate advocate, pretty much staying by his side almost without leaving. But this means, of course, she is missing work as a therapist. At the time of writing, it will have been one month without work. This means she will not be bringing in her monthly income, of course, and may lose some clients, understandably.
Many have helped in very thoughtful and practical ways. Mom and Dad have felt so much love, and support, as well as your prayers. (Keep 'em coming!) We know that with the friends and community that Bob and Mary Beth Woll have, there are many who will want to help financially.
This GoFundMe campaign is to help with monthly expenses, travel, food, medical bills, and things that come up through this journey. We're all grateful for the ways you have supported our parents and family. Any amount will help. We're thankful for your support.
The fight is not over. Dad and Mom are believing God will heal him, and we are standing with them. Dad has been facing this cancer with faith, courage, and his unique sense of humor.
