Hi, my name is Gbenken Lawrence Gbolo, I am a Black man and the owner and president of Bolo Clean, Inc. DBA Bolo Renovations based in Brooklyn, NY. As many other New Yorkers, my business has been impacted by the COVID-19 crisis and as a Black owned business that employs predominantly Black and brown workers, I know that sustaining in these difficult times is part of our commitment to sustaining our larger community.
Black Americans represent a myriad of experiences, but unfortunately racial prejudice is diminutive and erases the rich and varied histories we hold. While I migrated to the United States at the age of 16 as a political refugee from Liberia, West Africa, my experience of racial prejudice sadly mirrors too closely the stories we have heard resoundingly clear these past few weeks. Because I grew up in a Black country, where lawmakers, educators, physicians, judges looked like me, I never thought that the color of my skin could be a deciding factor in the opportunities available to me, the ease to which I could my accomplish my goals, and most alarmingly whether or not I am allowed enough breath to live another day. This harsh reality I learned in the United States. I have spent the last 16 years learning how to maneuver the racial caste system of this country and succeed in spite of the barriers thrown my way. By the age of 26 I had emigrated to a new country, attained a college degree, and established my cleaning and home improvement business, Bolo Clean, Inc. DBA Bolo Renovations and now I want to use my platform to pour back into my community.
We are facing a moment of reckoning where we each get to decide how we respond in the face of injustice and how we will act to build a more equitable future for our children. As a father, Black man, and business owner, I feel blessed to be able to utilize my role to encourage economic investment in my community. Bolo Clean stands in solidarity with the movement for the protection of Black lives. As such, our family-owned business, Bolo Clean, will be providing free cleaning, disinfecting, repair, and rejuvenation services to Black-owned businesses and places of worship in NYC that were adversely affected by protest activity or by the COVID-19 pandemic. I want to offer these services free of charge to Black-owned establishments that are already bearing disproportionate weight of the impact of this pandemic, and to this end I am turning to the larger community for financial donations to support this mission.
100% of the donations collected through this gofund me campaign will go towards covering employee labor costs. Our vision is to provide free services and materials to Black-owned establishments, while also keeping our Black and brown staff employed, allowing them and their families to continue thriving in the face of these difficult times. Our business, like many others, has felt the financial strain of lost contracts due to COVID-19, and your donation is an investment in supporting Black workers, Black-owned businesses, and the financial strength of Black communities.
