Brain Cancer Fight For Baby Riel

Donation protected
June 2019 baby Riel, at 7 months old, underwent a 10 hour surgery for the removal of a brain tumour. Most of the mass was removed, but some still remained in the brain stem after surgery. Riel suffered a bone infection after his first surgery and pathology results have diagnosed him with cancer. His cancer is called High Grade Infant Glioma brain cancer. It’s one of the rarest form of cancer. Meaning the only kid fighting this in the world. He currently has no bone in the back of his head from infection.

Riel started chemo treatment August long weekend 2019. Another brain surgery took place January 22, 2020 to removed more of the mass. Pathology determined that Riel remainder mass still was cancerous after 5 rounds of chemo. He then had a stem cell transplant in March 2020. The transplant was very hard for Riel but he came out the other side. He has trouble eating from the transplant so he mainly drinks smoothies.

April 2020, Riel went home after 10 and a half months  at BC children’s hospital and receiving intense chemo therapy. He spent over 270 nights in the hospital with his parents.

May 2020 Riel returned to BC children’s to start a new chemo protocol that will last 6-7 cycles. Riel will be at home unless cancer progresses and returning to BC children’s every 5-6 weeks for treatment.
