Books for RI children w/ incarcerated parents

We are a collective of students who are interested in dismantling the PIC complex, based at Brown University.  This project began back in October of 2018, when we set out to buy copies of Missing Daddy for youth with incarcerated parents in Rhode Island.

We have since gotten Missing Daddy placed in all 9 of Providence's Community Libraries and have met with officials who coordinate the parental programs within the Rhode Island Department of Corrections to facilitate delivery of the books to children with incarcerated parents in the state.  
 
We hope to get these books to children in two ways; through family visits and through an existing “Books Beyond” program. These books will be provided to children when they come to the ACI to visit their incarcerated loved ones, and through the Books Beyond program, they will receive the book in the mail. The Books Beyond program gets incarcerated parents to record themselves reading books in their own voice. This recording is then sent through the mail alongside the books.  

We thank our sponsors, the Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice and the Sarah Doyle Women's Center both at Brown University who each contributed to this project. We also thank the students at Brown University for collectively raising more than a thousand dollars. We are halfway to our goal - with $1665 raised. We aim to raise $3000 to buy 200 books.   The number here 1500, is to account for the fees gofundme places on transactions. 

Once the money is raised, Sophie Kupetz - one of the Brown students in the group will withdraw the funds and place a bulk order for the books. The books will then be delivered to the ACI for distribution.

This gofundme is intended for Brown students, friends and family of Brown students, community members, folks in Rhode Island and practically anyone who is interested to donate to this cause.
