Books in Hands in Westchester County
Donation protected
Sadly, many students in Westchester have no books available in their homes. With schools operating remotely, these children have no books to read for classwork or pleasure. The situation is particularly dire in Mount Vernon (70% of families are under the poverty level and White Plains (1200 students affected) school districts. Our effort will allow bags of age-appropriate books selected by teachers in those districts to be distributed to students when families receive weekly grocery packs. Our goal is to make the first book packets available as quickly as possible with a plan to have 5000 packets distributed by mid-May
We are working with Barnes & Noble to receive the best possible prices and speedy fulfillment. This is a collaboration of the Chappaqua Children's Book Festival and our authors, plus End Book Deserts and One Book Westchester.
Once we have gotten books to all Mount Vernon and White Plains' students in need, we hope to take the operation to Ossining, Yonkers and Mt. Kisco schools with similar circumstances. All funds will be spend on new books.
