Books for Gifts with Abergavenny Food Bank

Hi, my name is Bethan and I run Buzzard Books as an Usborne Partner and Team Leader here near Abergavenny.

I have a passion for getting brilliant books into the hands of children and young people, and for Christmas this year I want to get wonderful books as gifts for the children who’s families are needing to use Abergavenny Food bank.

I will be donating all of my commission to the cause, plus the 10% free books I get when I place bigger orders. Would you please donate what you can? My goal is to get at least 120 books, plus gift bags. The Foodbank will distribute them from November.

Reading for pleasure is single biggest indicator of a child’s future success. Book ownership is dropping fast, and yes there are libraries, but there are obstacles for some people attending libraries and actually owning a book is very different to borrowing. Children who own their own books are 6 times more likely to read above the level expected for their age, and 3 times more likely to enjoy reading for pleasure.

The cost of living is putting the biggest squeeze on family budgets in years and creating further barriers to reading for pleasure, with 64% of parents saying they currently have less money to spend on books for their children than before. 1 in 10 of those eligible for Free School Meals own a book. Over 1 in 5 pupils receiving free school meals said that the book they ‘bought’ with their World Book Day book token was the first book of their own.
