Black representation matters.

Hello Everyone,  My name is Liz Miranda and I am the Executive Director of the Hawthorne Youth and Community Center in Boston's Robxury neighborhood. I am a life-long Boston resident. Besides running my organization full-time, I sit on multiple community boards and am an activist mostly focusing on young people, girls and anti-violence initiatives. The fund you are donating to, is to specifically support as many youth in Boston to go see Black Panther for free along with snacks during the winter months.

On August 20th  I lost my younger brother to young violence and this is my gift through you to the youth of my city!

Our withdrawal plan is to buy out atleast (12) theaters and purchase as many tickets and  food vouchers on seven different days and work with community agencies, the City of Boston  and schools to identify students/ young people  and elders to attend the screenings.

Being inspired by the #blackpantherchallenge created by Frederick Joseph to send kids from the Harlem Boys and Girls Club and the work my friends and I do daily to give opportunities to young people in and around Boston-- we have decided to take action at an important moment in time. THE STORY "After raising over $50,000 on GoFundMe to take Harlem children to see Black Panther in theaters next month, New York resident Frederick Joseph launched the #BlackPantherChallenge. He called on others to start a GoFundMe in their community to take more kids to watch Black Panther in the theater. The GoFundMe community has answered the call. Thousands of people have donated to a GoFundMe, created a campaign in their community, or shared the #blackpantherchallenge online. To date, over 400 campaigns have raised over $400,000 helping thousands of kids see the movie next month. Donations have come in from all 50 states and 30 countries around the world."

“All children deserve to believe they can save the world, go on exciting adventures, or accomplish the impossible. I am grateful that all of you have answered the call and are taking action to help more kids watch their heroes on the big screen,” said Frederick Joseph. “Let’s keep pushing forward. If you’re a teacher, buy tickets for your entire classroom. If you’re a coach, take your team. If you're a community leader, do some organizing and get the kids and parents in your community to the theater.” THE WHY? We can be the heroes we wanted to see as children and our children can be superheroes too. We want to inspire our young people and help them see their own potential. From writers, to directors, to camera men and women to the cast- we are well represented FINALLY in the film. Representation matters, and Black Panther is the first predominantly Black Superhero movie in history  THE ACTION Our goal is simple. Take 2,000 young people (+ 200 Elders) we can in and around Boston to see Black Panther for free, plus snacks from From February through April 2018. We also want as many families to see the film together as possible, and in cases where there is not possible ensure caring chaperones are there for our youth.

The average cost for a movie ticket here is between $10-$12, and drinks/popcorn are between $10-$12 per person. So it is approximately $20 to send a young person, elder or a chaperone to the movies and ensure they eat too! Plus, in some cases transportation.

Please donate, share, retweet, post, slide in dm's etc. to show Boston, we do love and want to expose our youth to the representation they do not get to see and deserve. If you already bought a ticket, buy one for a kid you dont know.  Over 300 youth have already seen teh film this week and 1000 will during school vacation week and we hope to send an additional 500-750 the week after!

We have had ton of press from local news, to blogs to the radio! Thank you so very much!!!
