Bad Day at Bot-Mart

Donation protected

In the future, computers are implanted into your body so your boss can micromanage you more than ever. Annabelle hates working at Bot-Mart, until she meets the off-beat and charming Hunter. Can he convince her to take a chance for once, or is the computer right about how far she can go?

Overview

Here on Bear Island, Ken Burton, Darby Taylor, and Merina Khan are making a short film named Bad Day at Bot-Mart, to submit to film festivals.  It's a dystopian romance, with elements of social commentary. Think Black Mirror meets When Harry Met Sally.

Our previous work

You may know us at Bear Island Productions from Value Inn, which made the top 20 at the Louisiana Film Prize in 2020.

Where the money goes

We want our people to have an opportunity to make work they're proud of, and that means renting industry-standard gear for them to use, aka Camera, lights and time. We also will be providing food on set, and travel for the out-of-state members of the crew.

The Look

We're filming with an Arri Alexa Mini, with Zeiss standard speed prime lenses. This is the same camera used on films like Joker, The Irishman, and Knives Out.

We'll be shooting at the Super Valu in Ringgold, a prime location you may recognize from other Louisiana films like Candyland and Enter: Lola

The look we're going for is a clean and sterile workplace, with pockets of beauty bursting through in moments. Lots of cold light to illuminate the lonely night shift, and cold, predetermined camera movements.

THE CREW:

Ken Burton(left, (confused)) has been writing and directing films since he graduated at Southern Arkansas University in 2017. Value Inn brought him his first success on the festival circuit, breaking into the Prize Fest 20 top in 2020. He works as a Boom Op on films in Louisiana, including the award winning Shreveport Son, Promises of Snow, and Hard-Up.  His most recent credits include working as an Office P.A. on The Blind, where he learned what a stapler remover was.

Merina Khan is the cinematographer on Bot-Mart. Merina works as a full time 1st AC in Los Angeles where she has worked on many projects including productions with HBOmax and Disney+. She spends  her free time with her dog and explores the vast beauty of California. She's worked together with Ken on all of his films to date.

THE CAST

Darby Taylor
as Annabelle

Annabelle is the protagonist of Bad Day At Bot-Mart, a young woman who believes she's trapped in a dead-end career, working at Bot-Mart at the age of 22. Darby Taylor is an actor, a screenwriter, and soon to be published poet. After her screenwriting debut with Value Inn, she's taken a step back to just co-writing & starring in Bad Day at Bot-Mart. She lives with her 3 cats and bad attitude in Arkansas.

Connor Benedict as Hunter

Hunter is the romantic interest. He's an oddball, hates technology, and takes a liking to Annabelle immediately. Connor Benedict was born and raised in small town Mooringsport, Louisiana. He got his start at BPCC with a degree in Performing Arts and Mass Communications. Connor broke out onto the film scene in the award-winning short film "Gloria" in 2018, and has big goals and dreams to win an Oscar and travel the world.

Kyle Kidd as Gary

Gary is Annabelle's fake-friendly, passive aggressive boss at Bot-Mart. With just over 3.5 million followers cumulatively across  several social media platforms, Kyle Kidd, 24, of Ashdown Arkansas achieved overnight success on the video platform tik-tok when he began posting videos portraying his many brash, silly, and whacky characters under the account name "nannymaw", which is the name of his original and main hit character. Kyle has a background in theatre, and plans to continue to expand his comedy career in the future.
