Botswana Adventure Sparks Human Maun Connection

In April 2022, Melissa and I shared a once-in-a-lifetime, unforgettable, up close, and personal overland Safari in Botswana. Our awesome guide Janco introduced us to Dicks whom he hired as an assistant. Dicks lives in a room with his 4-year-old son in a cinder block house in Maun, Botswana. Dicks parents died when he was young, and he was raised by his older sisters, who are now helping raise his son, William. Dicks was only educated through 5th grade due to a lack of resources and transportation to get him to school. Yet Dicks was able to communicate with us in English, he shared his hopes and dreams to provide a better life for his son someday.
Dicks is 31 years old and demonstrated his ability to quickly assist us and others on our tour, as well as be our guide’s, right-hand man. He always had a smile and was willing to help out whenever needed. Socially, Dicks wasn’t confident speaking English. He does not have a driver’s license or a Botswana passport to cross the many borders in Africa. Having a license and passport and feeling more proficient with English will create new job opportunities in his field and will be life-changing for Dicks and his son William.
Melissa and I started this GoFundMe page to raise $2500, which will pay for driver's lessons/license, passport, and English classes for Dicks. One of the highlights of our trip was talking with Dicks and learning about his story. A small donation will greatly impact his life and allow him to earn an income as a Safari Guide. It is an opportunity to dramatically improve the life of this Botswana gentleman and his 4-year-old son.
