Bowser Esso Gas Station Fire

Bowser BC lost an iconic part of their community on December 6th when Bowser Automotive was reduced to rubble by the fire that destroyed the business and building. The Flegel Family has owned and served this community for 30+ years with fuel, propane, mechanics, towing and welding services.

Thomas has been the operating manager since his dad, Ted passed in 2020. Thomas lived onsite with his Fiancé Grace. They’re expecting their first baby in early December. They have lost their residence, livelihood and the bright future they envisioned and all the countless upgrades, even the award winning “Christmas light up” …. GONE….

Also, this fire destroyed the livelihood of Carla, five staff and VIU apprentice mechanic. All the tools, personal belongings, inventory, bookkeeping records and one of three tow trucks, are unrecoverable. Most of which are not covered by insurance. Monies from insurance will go toward the rebuilding of the premises. The insurance will not be enough to cover design, new building requirements, permit fees or the many unknown and hidden costs involved in restoring this business and service station to the town of Bowser.

The family is devastated by this tragedy, both personally and professionally. The community has echoed the sentiments of missing not only this longstanding building but the convenience and extraordinary personalized service offered by all the staff. The stories of community members being helped out of precarious positions with vehicles needing Bowser Towing, to the pride and professionalism of a Red Seal Mechanic who went ‘the extra mile’ to ensure the safety of the people in our community, are a testament to this iconic business. Everyone has sent messages and offers to ‘help’ in any way they can. And as we all know, it takes a community to raise a child and we know Thomas and Grace wish to raise their child right here in Bowser! This… is how you can help.
