Boxes of Joy Initiative
Donation protected
The Initiative:
In order to help during this pandemic, we are launching the Boxes of Joy Initiative. We will be donating a box to each of the 97 residents at the Hellenic Nursing Home in Canton, MA. If fundraising goes well, we will expand to additional nursing homes in the greater Boston area.
To bring some joy to their residents, and to help them from succumbing to feelings of loneliness and isolation, we will provide them with items that they not only need, but will also help fill their time during this quarantine period.
Each box will cost $20 to assemble and will include items such as lotion, socks, soap, crossword puzzles, deck of cards, a plant, individually wrapped cookies and a card made by a child in our community. Our goal is to have these delivered by August 1st, 2020.
The Ask:
Please consider donating what you can towards this Initiative. A $20 donation sponsors one box for a resident. Thank you for your support!
Background:
In Massachusetts 59% of all COVID related deaths have happened in long-term care facilities such as nursing homes. This population is also at a greater risk of early death due to being socially isolated and lonely. Data from the UK shows that this pandemic has already resulted in more deaths due to isolation than the virus itself where ⅔ of elderly deaths were non-virus related. If we do nothing to help make their isolation a little bit more bearable, the residents at our local nursing homes will continue to be very negatively impacted during this pandemic.
The residents at many nursing homes cannot have any visitors and cannot interact with one another. Social activities are not happening and most are confined to their rooms.
This is a small effort organized to help bring a bit of joy to our senior population. Thank you for participating in making this initiative come to life!
