Boy Scout Meeting Cabin Fire Damage
Donation protected
A few weeks ago, the local meeting location and property that the local Boy Scouts of America Troop 20 in North Salem was caught on fire. The weekend prior to the fire, some of the local homeless population in the nearby area was displaced, and quite a few of them have wandered onto the property and set up camp. In the middle of the night at some point, one of the campers on the property started a fire on our back deck. The fire got out of control and set the building on fire. The fire department was quick to respond, however the campers fled the scene and we were unable to hold accountability to the fire.
The fire had destroyed a large chunk of the wall on the outside of the building, as well as damage to the structure, drywall, and window of the building. The fire had also destroyed some gear and memorabilia for the Troop including flagpoles. As a community we have all come together to do the best we can in repairing some immediate damage to prevent further issues, as well as clean up the property. However, these measures are temporary, and the damage will need to be repaired by professionals to ensure safety of the building and future use. Considering the recent activity with the fire, as well as ongoing security issues, we are also hoping to invest in updated security measures for the building to prevent further issues like this.
For many generations, this building and property have served the scouting community very well. In serving the scouting community, it also helps the local troop serve the community in a way that has enlightened many lives of many children and adults alike. The fire and associated damages have saddened some of us personally as this place has been a place of fun, joy, and service for many years. The fire has caused us to cancel some of our scouting events for the upcoming weeks, however we are hoping for quick repairs for us to continue our path of scouting. We are hoping the goal listed is enough, but as scouters we are resourceful and as the scout law says, thrifty and trustworthy, we appreciate any donation!
